The Skerwink Trail: World-Class Scenery in Newfoundland

Where: Port Rexton, Newfoundland

When: Spring – fall (June – August are nicest)

Round trip: 5.3 km

What sets the Skerwink Trail apart?

The Skerwink Trail is the Holy Grail of hiking: world-class scenery, uncrowded, and easy.

Less famous than some other hikes, the Skerwink Trail punches well above its weight. In 5.3 short kilometers, the Skerwink Trail contains hidden beaches, sea cliffs, sea stacks, wildflowers, and a panoramic 360-degree hilltop view of the surrounding bays. You might even see humpback whales.

Avoid the crowds: We visited in mid-July and saw less than a dozen people in two hours.

No guardrails: Yes, that is a 100-foot drop on the left.

Stunning scenery: Plenty of opportunities to approach and scare yourself looking over the edge.

 Hidden beaches: And clear water.

A 360-degree view from the top: Full disclosure, this added five minutes of hiking.

Wildflowers: Newfoundland wildflowers go bananas in the summer.

Whales: Ok, so we didn’t see any, but YOU might.

It’s a loop: No need to double back.

5.3 kilometers: Did I mention it’s only 5.3 kilometers? Plenty of time to return home and enjoy an Iceberg Beer made from 25,000-year-old iceberg water. Bonus points if you spot an iceberg while drinking the beer.

Great photos! We will be visiting this coming summer. We love to hike. No issues climbing but I’m not a fan of sharp drop offs. If you stay on the trail, is that an issue, or is it only if you venture off?
