One-Star Review of Turkey

There are many reasons to visit Turkey. You won’t find them here.

1. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassusthe original mausoleum. One of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Now it’s a literal pit.

Ruins? More like ruined my trip.

2. This statue in Antalya of a boy about to be touched by an uncle:

Whoops! My shirt fell off.

3. The Paul Martin Canada store, named for Canada’s prime minister from 2003-2006. The store has a website with no explanation—and no connection to the prime minister.

A Justin Trudeau store would make sense.

4. In the debate about whether Santa Claus is white (he’s from Turkey), this bus station went full northern European.

Must get hot wearing that hat.

5. A beautiful sunset can’t make Taksim Square not boring.

One-star review of Turkey
Turks should protest for a better square.

6. Turkish coffee, unfiltered coffee grounds and hot water, goes great with a side of pickles and olives. Said no one ever.

One-star review of Turkey
Cheese toast was good though.

7. Turkish Viagra-induced buildings.

For sale in front of your local mosque.

8. Speaking as a Montanan, wtf?

One-star review of Turkey
Specializing in Montana cuisine: Mediterranean food.

9. Seriously, wtf???

One-star review of Turkey
They are obsessed with Montana.

Turkey straddles two continents and contains the worst of both. Pin-it if you agree (or don’t).

I have not been there yet, but Istanbul is one of my dream cities to teach and live in. I wonder if my experience will be different there next year when I start to integrate within the society as an educator.

When I live somewhere I tend to avoid the super touristy places unless they are truly unmissable (Great Wall, Machu Picchu, etc.) so we will have to see how it goes.

That said, I won’t be sharing this quite yet. I need to keep my dream alive. 😉

Hi Mica!

I think I need to keep experimenting with the tone of these articles. This one maybe came across too genuine! I was hoping it would be obvious they were fake, but I think a couple have a grain of truth that created some ambiguity.

Definitely don’t miss Istanbul. It’s like NYC or Paris for iconic sights to see, though obviously full of people. I think Turkish people were the nicest people I have met on average of any country I have visited.
